Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) has recognized Hedgehog Technologies with an Innovation in Sustainability Award for developing a solar and microgrid controller solution for an elementary school experiencing sudden blackouts. Our team is humbled to accept this award to promote sustainable innovation in our province.
Project: School District 78 – Solar and Microgrid Controller
School District 78 is located in Hope, BC and would often face blackouts as a result from prevailing mountain winds. The blackouts would result in students being sent home early and sometimes stranded at school. Our team developed an innovative microgrid controller with a solar solution that communicates with the battery, solar, and building to automatically divert stored energy when the school experiences a power outage.
The solution created a safer and more energy resilient school. Projects such as SD78 provide a real world example to young students about the importance of renewable energy and how it can be used to solve modern problems.
The project is featured in the Sept/Oct Edition of Innovation Magazine.
